Imperialism Alternative Assessment: Due Monday 10/28
I. Objective:
SWBAT create a product demonstrating their understanding of imperialism and its positive/negative effects of imperialism.
II. Assignment:
Select one of the following:
A. Write Your Own Song/Poem
Write your own song/poem about imperialism from the African perspective.
i. Requirements:
Song must:
· Have a clear anti imperialist bias— (think “Gentlemen of the Jungle” vs. “He Who Lost All”)
· Reference a minimum of three effects (either positive or negative) of imperialism
· Use a minimum of three symbols (objects used to represent larger ideas)
B. Literal Retelling
Rewrite the story of “Gentlemen of the Jungle” literally.
i. Requirements:
Stories must:
· Be a minimum four paragraphs long
· Translate the symbolism of the original story.
Ex. Man and Elephant fighting over hut = Africans and Europeans fighting over ownership of African land and
resources.
· Incorporate facts from class about imperialism
C. Political Cartoon
Create a political cartoon with an anti-imperialist bias.
i. Requirements:
Cartoon must:
· Incorporate at least three elements of I.S.E.A.L.
· Reflect the negative effects of imperialism.
· Be final draft quality – colored, neatly drawn/labeled, detailed, well composed
Includes a one paragraph written explanation of the cartoon’s message and use of I.S.E.A.L.
